Three more fishermen from Negros Occidental

Wednesday, June 25, 2008, Posted by John, No Comment

Three more fishermen were rescued in Aroroy town in Masbate Tuesday bringing to nine the number of fishermen rescued after more than 100 fishermen were reported missing in Romblon and Masbate at the height of Typhoon "Frank's" onslaught.

The latest three rescued were identified as Esmeraldo Mata, 40 and Pedro Delacruz, 53 of Cadiz City and Andres Cabus, 42 of Escalante City.

The three were part of the crew of fishing boat F.B. Laura Roland which was reportedly owned by a councilor in Cadiz City.

The three fishermen said their boat went to the side of Olontoya island in Capiz province to attempt to seek shelter from typhoon "Frank". They were surprised however that their location made them more exposed to strong winds and huge waves.

They said the strong waves caused their vessel to capsize then sink Friday morning.

"Hindi na makaya ng aming sasakyan at bumaligtad," said Mata.

"Naka-anchor kami tapos sobra ng lakas ng hangin, nasira ang engine room at doon nakapasok ang tubig," said Cabus.

The three survivors said they floated for three days and two nights with the other 11 crew members holding on to floating lumber. One by one however their fellow crew members disappeared from their sight, they said.

Oil

We are so affected now in the price of the petroleum and especially the price of rice. I don't how did it happen that both the two increase there price right now. I think its because the price now of the oil or the gasoline increase so that's why all of the products now also increase the price. So many people now are suffering because of the high price of the rice that really need by our fellow people. Especially the oil. Oh my God. Help us........ And I want to ask my self about this matter
" What would be the possible thing that the people can contribute about it?" Yes, I am really thinking about that question so that people can help what are the problem with this matter. Because if we look our community right now, some states and country are now starting to be chaos its because of the very high price of the rice and the gasoline. And if we take a look to those young children in our community they are so innocent about this and some of the young children now starting to work so that they will have money to buy food, but still the money that they earn is not enough to buy a food. How much the 1 kilo of rice cost now??? from the past year rice are almost 15 per kilo but now oh my God. I am only 18 yrs old boy but I say this words its because we are also suffering by this very high prices of products. So thats why i am asking a question what will be the possible things that we can made to contribute about this matter.

Ifugao lovers ordered to plant trees

Saturday, June 21, 2008, Posted by John, No Comment

Lagawe, Ifugao - While would-be couples from other provinces are busy just preparing papers needed for their weddings, couples here are busy planting trees.

A new ordinance signed by Mayor Caesario Cabbigat requires couples planning to get married to plant five trees before the local chief executive officiates their wedding.

Engaged couples may plant trees on their garden or on a vacant government-owned land.

A certification from the chairman of the barangay where the couple resides would attest that they have accomplished the requirements of the town's ordinance.

Cabbigat said that requiring couples to plant trees before they are allowed to marry would help add trees to their municipality.

He said that it will also teach them how to value their future family because planting trees symbolizes the raising of a child.

Oil prices fell in Asia on Thursday as investors took profits ahead of a high-profile weekend meeting in Saudi Arabia between oil producers and consumer nations, dealers said.

New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for July delivery, fell 61 cents to 136.07 dollars a barrel after a jump of 2.67 dollars to a close of 136.68 dollars Wednesday at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"There are at least some people in Asia who think there is good value in selling at these prices."

Laptop

UGGING around a big-screen MacBook Pro or other large laptop to the local Starbucks may give you a great visual experience on the road, but at close to seven pounds, it could also give you a bad back.

Computer makers are sensing that maybe there is a market opening for smaller laptops. A number of manufacturers have jumped in with what they are calling ultra-mobile PCs or mini-notebooks.

Their creators are hoping to carve out a niche between full-size laptops, which offer large screens, and smartphones, which make up in features and convenience what they lack in size. These computers can do what any other laptop or desktop can do, but they have screens that are not much bigger than a paperback book.

They first gained serious attention last year after Asus began selling its Eee computer. Thanks to its success, a slew of other manufacturers, like Everex, Fujitsu and Hewlett-Packard, have jumped in and are selling minis ranging from $299 to more than $1,000.

Industry analysts expect mini-notebooks to remain a niche category, especially in the United States and Western Europe, where many people can afford to spend a few hundred dollars more for a bigger and speedier portable machine while using a smartphone or other device as an adequate substitute.

“This is for people who would have bought a desktop, but buy this to save money,” said Leslie Fiering, a vice president at the research firm Gartner.

Indeed, their availability in the United States has left some analysts scratching their heads. “Why would you want a PC with stripped-down features that make it harder to do your work?” said Benjamin A. Reitzes, a computer industry analyst at Lehman Brothers.

That raises the question: Is cost the only reason to buy this neither-fish-nor-fowl device? Some people may focus on the small screen as a problem. Others may be concerned because some devices store less data and sometimes run out of battery power faster than larger laptops. But the deciding factor in whether you want to buy a mini may be how well you can type on it.

Anyone who has used the Internet on an iPhone or other smartphone knows how much of an effort that is compared with getting to the same Web site from a PC. The shrunken keyboards on the minis can also be difficult for the sausage-fingered. While it isn’t arduous to type in the name of a restaurant while searching a Google map or dashing off a series of text messages, creating a whole document may not be as easy as on a full-size laptop.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Price of rice in the city has dramatically gone done this week.

A P3.50 per kilogram decrease in the price of the most expensive variety of rice and a P5 per kg cut on the cheapest commercial rice were recorded in General Santos City Central Public Market during the past four days.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the Batanes group of islands on Sunday but was barely felt in the rest of the country. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

Former congressman Butch Abad told ABS-CBN News that he was in area when the quake struck. He described it as "particularly strong" but had no information on any damage or casualties.
