6.3-magnitude earthquake

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the Batanes group of islands on Sunday but was barely felt in the rest of the country. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

Former congressman Butch Abad told ABS-CBN News that he was in area when the quake struck. He described it as "particularly strong" but had no information on any damage or casualties.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake had a magnitude of 6.3 with an epicentre about 76 kilometers west of the Batanes town of Basco.

The quake was felt strongly in Basco but was barely noticeable in the northern provinces of the Philippines' main island of Luzon, the institute said, adding that aftershocks were expected.
